If you’re like most parents, you work hard to succeed and enjoy being respected for achieving excellent results. Maybe you don’t always feel like you win at work, but you know there are principles and practices necessary for business success.

Yet you also know there’s more to life than business success. You want a family you can be proud of.

But something seems to change when you leave work and go home to your family every night. It’s as if any success you enjoy during the day vanishes and you bring any failures home with you.

Parenting these days can often leave you feeling dazed and confused by the chaos you feel at home.

Does This Sound Like You?

Let’s be honest:

  • Do you feel like you lack the clarity and confidence to succeed as a parent?
  • Do you secretly fear it just might not be possible for you to win at home?
  • Do you worry that your opportunity to build a family you can be proud of is fading a little more each day?

If so, know that you are not alone. A lot of families who seem to have it all together feel the same way when it comes to their families. In fact, I’ve been there myself.

I Know How You Feel

I know what it feels like to be in over your head at home—to enjoy tremendous business success, but feel totally clueless when it comes to achieving family success.

I used to joke with fellow business leaders who wanted to become better parents that it was much easier to be the CEO of my business than it was to be the CEO of my own home. But the reality wasn’t funny.

When I left the office each day, I left a world of rules, strategies, and success and entered a world of chaos, drama, and raging hormones.

I’ve been blessed to enjoy some success in business. I’m the CEO of Ziglar Family and President and CEO of the company I co-founded fifteen years ago—Cottage Garden, Inc. I knew what I was doing when it came to running a business.

But the chaos at home left me bewildered and confused. I found myself staying away from home, traveling more frequently—up to half the year—so I wouldn’t have to deal with my own sense of inadequacy.

Even though I loved everyone at home, I lacked the clarity and confidence to be a better parent. Or so I thought.

After several years of this crazy pattern, I knew I had to find a different way to manage our family. Our legacy was just too important to let drift aimlessly. We needed a fresh approach our kids could embrace and that made sense to my wife and me.

When my wife and I married in 2011, we were both single parents with three children each. We had merged our two families to form a modern-day Brady Bunch.

But it wasn’t working.

I knew something had to change and fast, so I did what I knew how to do—a S.W.O.T. analysis. (Strengths. Weaknesses. Opportunities. Threats.)

After completing a family strategic planning session with my wife, we found the answer where we least expected it to be. Instead of thinking of my family as a mystery, I began thinking of my family as a business.

Now I use what I already know—how to lead and grow a successful business—to lead and grow my family every day.

And I love it!
